New Booster Seat Law

A new law that takes effect Jan. 1, 2012 requires children use booster seats longer, drawing mixed reaction from parents, educators. The law states that boosters are required until age 8.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, requires children to remain in booster seats until they are 8 years old or are 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Currently, children legally can avoid booster seats when they turn 6 or reach 60 pounds.

Parents caught violating the law could be hit with a fine of nearly $500 and have a point deducted from their driving record.

New Committee Category Added
We have added a new committee category for people who help out in the Charter School office.  These people help with clerical tasks, organizing donated office supplies, help with the telephone answering and other general office support.  Contact Pamela Van Halsema if you are interested in helping out in this way in either a regular or 'on-call' basis.  pvanhalsema@yahoo.com

Classroom Rosters

Hello SREC Community,

Participation is off to an amazing start this year, thank you! I wanted to ask you to please take a moment to let your classroom parent know how you are supporting our community and your child's education. Do you work in the classroom? Are you on a committee? Have you helped clean the bathrooms? Did you collect Escrip receipts outside of Safeway? We want to know! Please let them know how you are fulfilling your volunteer obligation and we will be putting that info on classroom rosters. Thank you so much for all you do!

How to Pre-Order Hot Lunch

We would really like to emphasize the importance of PRE-ORDERING hot lunch.  We order the hot items for lunches the day before hot lunch, i.e., Monday and Thursday. To help us order the right amounts, it would really be helpful to know who is ordering hot lunch by the prior hot lunch day (i.e. Get your order for Tuesday’s pizza in on the Friday before; get your order for Friday lunch in on Tuesday morning).

Better yet, use the online order form (accessible from the Charter School website; mouse over the “forms” link in the banner) and order for the whole month in advance, then you can rest assured there will be a lunch waiting for your child.  Unfortunately, at times we do run out of food and the students who have not pre-paid are the ones who end up not getting fed, so it would be really great if we could all get used to ordering at least a day in advance!

Thanks for your help in making our lunch program run smoothly.

Enjoying Early Learners

All kinds of great things are happening in Early Learners! The class had a fun time playing with goo. Experimenting with textures can be so intriguing for young minds and squishy goo was a huge hit! Plus, they got good practice washing their hands. Learning happens everywhere!

Art is another popular activity in Early Learners and our parent volunteers have such a good time joining in! Check out Blake and Costa working together at the art table. Outside, the kids enjoy digging in the sand box and helping to water the plants. The costume area is always full of activity and imagination!

Morning Circle Time is a special time where the class comes together to start the day with songs, a morning news report and learning about colors, letters and more! Miss Catherine has a true love for teaching and always makes time for her students, whether they need a lap to sit on or a friend to play with.

Early Learning is a supportive and exciting place to start the school experience. Thanks for sharing a moment with us, and look for more updates to come!
