History

In 1951, a group of parents founded the Santa Rosa Cooperative Play School, embracing the practice of Adlerian Positive Discipline. In 1992, the passage of the Charter Schools Act enabled groups of teachers and parents to open public schools. Charter schools are held to higher standards to encourage innovative programs, increase parent participation and raise standards. The Santa Rosa Charter School received its original charter in 1995 from the Santa Rosa City School Board and it was renewed in 2000. It is the seventy-fifth school to receive a charter in the state of California.

We continue to operate our preschool as a cooperative and we have added a Children's Center. The latter provides member families with day care for their students and siblings from age 2 through age twelve and is open 7:30 a.m. through 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our Children's Center provides enrichment activities year round. Both the preschool and Children's Center receive no public funding and are self supporting.
